MINISTRY OF THE SCRIPTURES
The living and powerful Word of God ministers to us with comfort and hope during times of suffering. Journalist Terry Anderson was kidnapped by Shiite Moslem fundamentalists on March 15, 1985 and was held until December 4, 1991. In the first weeks of captivity, he was given a Bible which he read more than fifty times, from cover to cover. After he was released, he said, “I found consolation and counsel in the Bible. Not other-world, ‘this is just a test’ kind of consolation, but comfort from the real, immediate voices of people who had suffered greatly and in ways that seemed so close to what I was going through.” Terry experienced what Romans 15:4 states: “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.”
