I wanted to write a prayer for my youngsters to say at bedtime. There are so many of them, but somehow, none seemed just right for my children. So I produced one of my own. After much thought, I came up with this much of one: As I go to sleep tonight. I pray to you with all my might. Help me be cheerful and bright, Always be my parents’ delight. Then I was stymied. After much cogitation, I came up with a tentative last line: And teach me to do what’s right. Of course we should do what is right. But often we do it because we have to or because the policeman is watching…
