CHRISTMAS — MODERN TRANSLATION
Something over ten years ago the sixth-grade class of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Midland, Michigan wrote this composite modern version of the Christmas story. I clipped it back then and have subsequently lost the reference: The President and Congressmen sent out a request for all the citizens of the United States to register themselves for a tax count. This was the first enrollment when Nixon was President of the United States. Everyone went to his own city to enter his name on the tax list. A man named Joseph went up from Atlanta to Detroit, the City of Cars, on his motorcycle with his wife, Mary, who was going to have a baby. Mary gave birth to her first son in the back room of a gas station in a large shopping center, because all the hotels and motels were full, and they could not find a place to stay.
