Along a similar vein is the one about the pastor who has just announced to the congregation that he would be leaving their church. There is a good deal of crying and lots of kind words. As the pastor is talking to one lady who has expressed her sadness at his leaving, he consoles her with the generous words, “Oh, don’t feel bad. I’m sure our superintendent will come up with a much better replacement.” And she turned and said, “Oh, that’s what they said last time, in fact that’s what they say all the time. But it never has worked out!”
