HOW TO SURVIVE A SERMON
Strategy #1: Wait for at least one idea in the sermon before giving up. Sometimes a preacher can stand in the way of God’s speaking for a long time, and, inadvertantly, say something true and memorable. Strategy #2: Fight back. It is probably best to do this silently . . . for every sermon thesis there is an antithesis. Discover the truth that has been ignored; articulate it (to yourself), and you and the preacher may have put together a respectable fragment of Christian truth. Strategy #3: Let your mind wander. The art of mindwandering is neglected these days. If the minister speaks platitudes, let your imagination create the sermon that is eluding him/her.…
