In A.J. Cronin’s best-selling novel, “The Keys of the Kingdom,” a young doctor struggles to believe in God, but he can’t. A sensitive, compassionate person, he goes to China to do what he can to help the victims of famine and plague. Eventually, the doctor himself is stricken. On his deathbed he speaks to his best friend — a missionary priest. But, even now, he remains a non-believer. “Funny,” he says to the priest, “I still can’t believe in God.” And the grief-stricken priest answers simply, “Does that matter now? He believes in you.” This is what the Christmas stories and the miracle stories and the parable stories and the Resurrection stories are all about. Through them — through Jesus — God is telling us that He believes in us. This is the incredible Good News of the Gospel.
