Once, after playing his latest composition on the piano, a famous composer was asked to explain the music. The artist stared at his questioner for a moment and then played his composition all over again. That was the composer ’s way of saying that music leaps beyond the realm of neat explanation. No self-respecting artist would spend his time formulating theories about why he composes as he does. The world of melody and sound is enveloped in mystery that ultimately defies theorizing and categorizing.
