The staff of life it’s often said
Is nothing more or less than bread.
Some of you may remember singing that little jingle from your childhood days. Children used to sing it while jumping rope or playing “patty-cake.” If you were one of those children, you would not have known that the jingle was making a profound Biblical statement. You would not have realized that Jesus identified Himself as the Staff of Life. “I Myself am the Bread of Life,” He said. “No one who comes to Me shall ever be hungry” (Jn. 6:35).
Today’s Gospel story must have been very important in the life of the early Christians because until we get to the Gospel story of Jesus’ Crucifixion, it is the only incident in His life that appears in all four Gospels. It would seem that the New Testament writers wanted to be absolutely certain that succeeding generations would get the message.
The story is well known to us…
