“Far be it for me to glory except in the Cross of Jesus Christ, Our Lord” (Gal. 6:14). This familiar phrase from the Apostle Paul is one of Scripture’s most profound expressions of an unfathomable mystery — the central mystery of our faith and what our Christian life is all about. The shadow of the Cross is in the Gospels from the Christmas stories on. From beginning to end the New Testament writers are telling us that the new and living way to God is opened up for us by the crucifixion of Our Lord because it is the supreme revelation of God’s mercy and forgiveness.
Recall, if you will, the Bible story of the woman caught in adultery. She was caught! She was guilty! She was humiliated standing in the circle of righteous men! She was condemned to death, and she was afraid! She was anguished! Perhaps she was even angry, because her male partner in the act had been let go. You…
