The Prophet Isaiah and the other Old Testament Prophets believed that the Israelites were the Chosen People of God but that this was not a sign of special privilege. It was a sign of special responsibility. They knew that God had a mission for Israel, a purpose for these people and that He would form them and shape them and mold them to fulfill this purpose. Isaiah described it as Israel’s responsibility to be a “light to the nations.”

Think of what this could mean. A great and powerful people who understand that they have been chosen to bring light to the other nations. Isaiah goes on to suggest that this may be unpopular; that there will be difficulty in doing this; that the “Chosen Nation” may even have to assume the shape of “servant” to do this. You may even have to become a “suffering servant,” Isaiah said. You will have to humble yourself in order to fulfill this mission. This is what…
