Today’s Gospel Lesson comes to us in the story of Jesus walking on water. Jesus has just performed the miracle of feeding thousands of people with five loaves of bread and two fishes. Apparently not wanting to see the crowd’s enthusiasm turn the event into a popular demonstration, Jesus leaves the area hurriedly. He instructs the Apostles to get into their boat and wait for Him on the distant shore. This leads to the incredible scene in which Jesus and Peter meet on a windy sea.
When, in obedience to Jesus, the Apostles set off in their boat, a violent storm arose. “The boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, and it was being “beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them,” Matthew tells us. (Mt. 14:24,25). And it was in that situation of danger that Jesus came to the Apostles, “walking on the sea.” When the disciples saw this, they were terrified. They thought they were seeing…
