Do you remember the Old Testament story in which the prophet Jonah becomes angry with God and ends up in the belly of a huge fish? The story begins when God commands Jonah to go and preach in the great city of Ninevah, warning the people that because of their wickedness, the city would be destroyed. But Jonah hates the Ninevites. He wants no part of them, and he refuses to go. Instead he goes to sea. A great storm arises, Jonah is thrown overboard, the big fish swallows him and for three days and three nights Jonah prays for deliverance. Finally, the big fish deposits Jonah on the shore. God says to him, “Up! Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to them as I told you” (Jon. 3:1). This time Jonah obeys. He goes to Nineveh and preaches these words: “Only forty days more and Nineveh will be destroyed.” Jonah eagerly waits for God to fulfill that prophecy. But, the Ninevites repent…
