A middle-aged man was sitting in the doctor’s reception room, waiting to discover whether or not he had cancer. The minutes hung heavily on him. He kept looking at his watch. He felt that he could no longer endure the agony of not knowing. And then he heard a voice: “The doctor will see you now.” And as he walked into the doctor’s office, he said to himself, “Am I going to die?”
To that question, of course there was only one answer. “Yes, he was going to die — just as you are going to die, just as I am going to die. Sooner or later, each of us will breathe his or her last breath on this earth — just as did Jesus Himself on the first Good Friday.
We of course know that Jesus’ death was unique, in that this death is a death that gives us life. In and through this terrible Crucifixion we are able to experience, at the deepest…
