The Twentieth Century: an incredible era of modern technology! Rockets blast off to distant space targets, often landing with pinpoint accuracy. Thousands of people are shuttled daily from continent to continent by mammoth jetliners. Robots with movable arms build automobiles on computerized assembly lines that move more swiftly and precisely than those formerly run by humans.
The Twentieth Century is also an incredible era of artificial beauty. Men with polished, handsome features and women with radiant, unblemished skin (aided by an artist’s airbrush), look out from billboards and magazine covers, challenging one and all to follow them into the fantasy-lined world of the macho-man and the glamorous woman.
Technology and glamor. Glamor and technology. And men and women, young and old, still searching, searching, searching for the happiness that seems always just out of reach; still victims of a culture which promises satisfaction but cannot come through, a culture which offers fulfillment but cannot deliver, a culture which excites the senses but cannot…
