In the 1980’s, often referred as the decade of greed, a new word was coined to describe young, “upwardly mobile” people obsessed with the desire for quick financial success: “Yuppie.” One Wall Street journalist defined Yuppie as “someone with a college degree in business who is determined to let nothing in the way of his or her becoming a multi-millionaire by age thirty-five.”
Comedian Soupy Sales tells the story of a young man with “Yuppie” ambitions who married the daughter of a wealthy businessman. After the honeymoon, the new father-in-law called the new son-in-law into his office and announced that he had made him a full partner in the business. The young man was ecstatic.
