As the story goes, the Notre Dame football team was en route to a long awaited game against one of its chief rivals. A reporter met the team at the airport and quickly cornered the team’s coach. “It has been widely reported that your football squad always travels with a priest to pray for the team’s success on the gridiron,” the reported said. “I would love the opportunity to interview the Chaplain. Would you mind introducing me to him?”
“No problem!” the coach eagerly replied. “Just tell me, which one do you want to meet first? The Offensive, Defensive or Special Teams Chaplain?”
A big-time football fan, Dwight Eisenhower was reported to say, “An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame football game and doesn’t care who wins.”
Ridiculous, but it makes the point. As another famous coach put it, “some people think football is a matter of life and death, but I assure you, it’s much more serious than that.”…
