Greatest Gift

If you were to consult a wedding etiquette expert, you’d discover that traditional rules say you have up to one year following the ceremony to send your gift. But are there rules for when the gift should be opened? A Michigan couple, Brandon and Kathy Gunn were recently featured on a popular morning news show. And though the couple has been married for more than nine years, they just recently opened their last wedding present.

“It was by far the greatest gift because it taught us so many lessons about how to be married,” Kathy said. The present was from one of Kathy’s aunts who included a note with the gift that read:”Do not open until first disagreement.”

If they followed the aunt’s instructions, the couple said they should have opened the package early in their first year of marriage (what couple wouldn’t?). But they never opened it. “You kind of wonder,” said Kathy, “is it time to turn to the box? Should we open…
