Advent is the Season of high hopes and expectations. Little children wonderfully sum up the Advent Spirit in three little words: “Christmas is coming!”
Christmas: that beacon of high hopes and great expectations for our life’s fulfillment. That’s what we’re after, is it not? Isn’t happiness the goal of life? Isn’t that where our hopes and great expectations lie? Or is it?
Do I surprise you when I imply that happiness is not our goal in life? But this is precisely the light that comes into our lives on Christmas day. The message of Christmas is that we are called to follow the Lord Jesus in doing God’s Will.
The message of Christmas is that our true goal in life is to do God’s Will.
This is the constant teaching of the Gospels, not “Thou shalt be happy,” but “Thou shalt do the Will of God.”
