Spellcheck is a funny thing — sometimes. We’ve all experienced the frustration of quickly composing a text, only to have spellcheck swoop in to embarrass us. Ironically there is no official spelling of the word spellcheck (either one or two words is currently acceptable).
It seems hard to believe that when the first word processing program was introduced, it didn’t even have a basic spelling feature. Today’s programs not only include a dictionary and thesaurus but other writing tools such as translation, smart lookup, and research. Then, there is the hugely popular Grammarly program online that will scan your text, flag mistakes, and even make suggestions to improve your writing. Lesser known is a website called the “Hemingway Writer,” named after the famed Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist. This program will attempt to apply Hemingway’s unique way with words to your writing.
