In Matthew’s account of the Wise Men’s journey to Bethlehem in today’s Gospel, we read:

… there in front of them was the star they had seen rising; it went forward and halted over the place where the child was. The sight of the star filled them with delight, and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and falling to their knees they did him homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Mt. 2:9-11).

At the time of Jesus’ birth, the ancient “Medes” were among the leading authorities in many fields, including medicine, philosophy, religion and astrology. And because of their dedication to the search for truth, these scholars were called the “Wise Men.” The Magi we read about in today’s Gospel Lesson were Medes. This is why Matthew refers to them as the “three Wise Men from the East.” And it was to them — the Wise Men — that…
