During an interview at the party, the first question asked was, “To what do you attribute your longevity?” Without missing a beat, the comic replied, “Breathing.”

No argument there: no breath, no life.

In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus answers the question of how to achieve spiritual longevity, so to speak.

It is the first Easter Sunday and the Risen Lord appears to the disciples saying, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent Me, I am sending you.” The Apostle John then tells us that Jesus breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

Jesus, the Bread of life, Jesus the Breath of life, breathes the Holy Spirit of God into our souls in order to sustain us spiritually. No argument there, either.
