Right This Very Minute!

If it hasn’t started already, in just a few short weeks we will begin hearing the familiar Christmas song hit parade playing in shopping malls and businesses throughout the land. One popular holiday favorite is the song “We Need A Little Christmas,” which was written for a 1960s Broadway musical.-1 In the show, the song is performed when the lead character is facing a particularly hard time and wants to brighten her mood as she sings “We need a little Christmas, right this very minute!”

I must admit, I have often thought of that song at times when I could use a bit of encouragement. But this morning, I’m singing a different tune. This morning, I’m talking about a pressing need made painfully obvious by the public discourse that rules the day. And if I could set it to music it would go something like this: “We need a little humility, right this very minute.”

We see this need in the way politicians…
