Good morning, and Happy New Year!

It has been said that an optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in — that a pessimist stays up until midnight to make sure the old year leaves — and that the rest of us are asleep by 10:30!

On New Year’s day we lament our failures of the past year as we anticipate our successes in the new one! That may be funny, but it does seem to be in our nature. Too often as we look back we think about what went wrong, and yet we are hopeful when looking forward.

Recently, a well-regarded educator who is expert in the science of “happiness” (yes, there is such a science) has been featured in a television commercial to promote an investment product. The ad begins with Professor Daniel Gilbert asking these two simple questions:
