Belief in the Biblical account of creation is still common amoung Americans according to a 1991 Gallup Poll. But belief in a literal interpretation of the Bible continues to decline. The poll found that only 32% of U.S. citizens believe the Bible should be taken literally, word for word, Baptist press reported. The number has steadily declined since 1963, when 65% claimed they believed every word in Scripture should be taken as factual. Still 49% in the most recent poll expressed confidence that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, though it does not have to be interpreted literally in every instance. The poll says 46% believe God created human beings sometime within the last 10,000 years, pretty much in his present form. Another 40% believe people “developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process.” Another 9% believe God had no part in the evolutionary process.
