CATERPILLAR CONFUSION
While vacationing on Orcas Island, I sat one morning looking out the picture window in our little cabin by the sea. On the deck was a picnic table, and on top of the table was a caterpillar. I watched him in the morning light as he crawled across the top of the table and reached the edge. He poked his head over the edge into the vast openness below the table’s edge. He wavered about in confusion for a while. He then turned around and crawled in the other direction. Soon he reached the opposite edge of the table. Again he poked the front half of his body over the edge. His fear quickly returned him to the safety of the table. But there was no place to go. I walked outside, picked up a twig and tried to coax the reluctant caterpillar onto the twig. But the caterpillar was afraid to walk onto the twig. He could not understand that I…
