During Napoleon’s conflicts with Great Britain, many of the men of France were forced into military service by a conscriptive lottery. If a man’s name was drawn, he had to serve in the army. When one particular man’s name was drawn, he surprised the authorities by informing them that he would not serve in the army because he had already been shot and killed. He explained that his name had been drawn two years ago. A close friend who, unlike this man, had no family or commitments had taken his place two years ago and was killed in action. When the case was investigated and referred to Napoleon for a decision, Napoleon said that the man was free from further military service; he had died in the person of another. We are no longer obligated to serve sin, we have died in the person of Jesus Christ.
