FLATTERY FALLS FLAT
“Flattery will get you nowhere,” can be truly said in regard to our relationship with the Father. Flattery is false praise. Flatterers begin their career, I believe with a correct observation: “It is a good thing to praise people.” But they continue it for the wrong reasons. They notice that praise makes people feel good, that it warms their relationships. You can’t have too much of a good thing, they figure, and do it without thinking at all. They gush compliments. At first flatterers impress us with their remarkable discernment. But soon we realize that they don’t mean a thing they say. They would adore our clothes if we wore a sack. Flatterers think they are very nice people, but they really, with their false currency, drive out genuine praise and thus weaken relationships. In a society of flatterers, we cannot tell what people actually think, and fairly often, I suspect flatterers do not themselves know that they really think. They…
