In LONESOME DOVE, by Larry McMurtry, one of the main characters, Jake Spoon, wasn’t what you would call the most moral individual to begin with, but he wasn’t the worst either; He just sort of fell in with the wrong crowd. He was running away from responsibility and found himself in a mess he couldn’t get out of. If you know the story, it’s a western and about a cattle drive from Texas to Montana.
