DURANT ON PURPOSE
Renowned historian Will Durant mailed questionnaires to a number of famed contemporaries. Among other things, he asked, “What is the meaning and worth of life?” The replies to his questions were published in a book — with the first chapter entitled, “An Anthology of Doubt.” Durant summed up his own feelings: “God, who was once the consolation of our brief life and our refuge in bereavement and suffering, has apparently vanished from the scene; no telescope, no microscope discovers Him. Nothing is certain in life except defeat and death, a sleep from which there is no awakening. Faith and hope disappear.
