GUILTY!
A stern-faced, plainly-dressed man was seen standing on a busy street corner on the Chicago Loop some years ago. As pedestrians hurried by on their way to lunch or wherever, he would solemnly lift his right arm, point his finger at the person nearest him, and cry loudly one word, “GUILTY!” Then, without any change of expression, he would resume his stiff stance for a few moments before repeating the gesture. Then, once again, the solemn raising of the arm, the pointing of the finger, and the frightful cry, “GUILTY!” The effect of this strange man on the passing strangers was extraordinary, almost eerie. Some just stopped and stared at him, others simply would hesitate, look away look at each other, look at him and then hurry away to get lost in the passing crowd. One fellow turned to another and exclaimed: “But how did he know?” No doubt, others had similar thoughts. How did he know, indeed? From, Whatever Became of Sin?…
