BELOW THE SURFACE
Each day the road seems to buckle more and more until it has the properties of an old washboard. Here and there potholes open up where water has seeped in and frozen in the night air. The car tires beat the road surface into chunks, and before long the entire length of Shaker Road is a mess. Shaker Road was like that but not Route 106. The road repair gang gave a simple explanation why Route 106 was different. Route 106 had a carefully laid thick bed of gravel beneath the road bed that provided the necessary drainage. Shaker Road had simply been graded and a thick patch of asphalt laid over it. “A quick and dirty job,” someone said. It is just as important to begin with a solid subsurface and then build the surface. From Restoring Your Spiritual Passion, Gordon MacDonald, pgs. 157 & 158
