WHOM WE WORSHIP
One of the real problems of our time is the near celebrity status of many preachers. Many men are almost worshipped by their followers. Lyman Beecher Stowe wrote a book entitled, Saints, Sinners, and Beechers. He told about the incident when Thomas K. Beecher appeared in the pulpit instead of the renowned Henry Ward Beecher. A great number of people had turned up, but Thomas Beecher sensed that the people were disappointed because he was substituting for his brother. Thomas Beecher raised his hand for silence and announced. “All those who come here this morning to worship Henry Ward Beecher may leave the church now; all who came to worship God may remain.”
