DISCERNING PROPHETS
The Old Testament teaching on prophesy, gives insight on that which should guide the thinking of the believer. The people of God are warned to ignore those prophets who aren’t prophets of God. They were to carefully heed the oracles that were given by God’s prophets and to stone false prophets. So then, how did they tell the difference? Almost every prophet, son-of-a-prophet, and all those who fall in between, claim their messages are from God. In Dueteronomy 10:10 – 22, God lays out the test for a true prophet who speaks his message. The bottom line is that the true prophet will never be mistaken, all prophecies will come true. For those who flunk the test, death by stoning was prescribed. There was a secondary test for measuring a prophet who passed the first test.
