A GUN BY ANY OTHER NAME
During the first week of Basic Training with the U.S. Army, our drill sergeant was explaining the course of events we would experience during the next two months. One young private asked a question from the back of the formation, “Sergeant, when do we get our guns?” The Drill Sergeant quickly corrected the private, “Private, we don’t have ‘guns’ in the Army. We use the M-16, A-1 Military Assault Rifle. If I catch any one of you calling the M-16 a ‘gun,’ I’ll have you drop and give me fifty push ups. Now then, private, repeat your question.” The private nodded, then said, “Sergeant, when do we get our guns?” Sometimes we should remember that our best preaching still falls on deaf ears!
