RIDE WITH ME, SIR
Making my way around the line of M1A1 Abrams tanks and M2 Bradley fighting vehicles was a routine task. But the voice and message that came across the radio of the tank I was climbing out of was anything but routine. We were in the country of Iraq. We were poised to attack a Republican Guard Division during Operation Desert Storm. The excited voice cried out, “Incoming! We have a man down!” I immediately climbed back into the tank turret to better hear what was happening and to seek protection from what might be raining down upon us. There was a confusion of messages. Were we under attack? Where was the attack coming from? Were we in the midst of an Iraqi mine field?
