GOD NEVER HELPS
In the August, 1993 issue of Guideposts, actress Mariette Hartley — who played opposite from James Garner on over two hundred and fifty Polaroid commercials — tells a story she heard when undergoing treatment for alcoholism. It was a story of an unbeliever who was talking to a priest. “Hey, Father,” said the man. “You got it all wrong about this God stuff. He doesn’t exist. I oughta know.” “Why’s that, my son?” “Well, when I was ice-fishing in the Arctic far from the nearest village, a blizzard blew up with wind and blinding snow. I was a goner.
