THE CHRISTMAS VAMPIRE
The world has claimed our holidays for its own, secularizing them by removing their spiritual foundations. I have felt for some time that the church needs to reclaim the true meaning of the holidays. My concerns were reinforced last year by my three-year-old daughter Betsy. At the end of October she went trick-or- treating for the very first time. My wife had worked hard sewing a cute lady bug costume Betsy had picked out of a pattern book. As the holiday approached, however, Betsy decided she would rather be a vampire. Her mother and I bargained with her, and she finally agreed to be a lady bug this year and a vampire next Halloween. A few weeks after Halloween, the Sunday School class began rehearsing for the annual Christmas pageant.
