ROMANCE NEEDS FRIENDSHIP
From Pick a Husband Who’ll Be A Friend: I see young people today who are madly in love with each other, drunk with visions of a fairy-tale romance and happily ever afters. And I say to myself, “Great, romance is lovely. But it doesn’t mean a thing if you don’t have friendship.” Nothing matters more in a marriage than friendship. Everything else… will eventually fade. But friendship endures. It is, I believe, the only thing that endures, and it is the one ingredient required for a marriage — or any relationship, for that matter — to last. If we treated our spouses, our sweethearts, our parents and our children as we treat our best friends, with the same forgiveness and tolerance and forbearance, we would all be better for it.
