Few life forms on earth evoke the fear that does the great white shark. The deadly predator reigns supreme because of its ability to rip and tear any foe into submission. Any foe, that is, except a small delicate flatfish that abounds around the Red Sea and that looks very much like an ordinary flounder or sole. But there the similarity ends. The innocent- appearing “Moses Sole,” as the Israelis call it, is in reality a giant-killer. In experiments conducted by members of a National Geographic team of researchers, the huge shark would race directly at the “Moses Sole” with saw-toothed mouth gaping open, ready to devour the helpless fish. But the great jaws never snapped shut. Instead the shark would race away frantically shaking its head with its powerful jaws frozen open while the gentle little “Moses Sole” would continue swimming around contentedly as though nothing special had taken place.
