A THING OF BEAUTY
The football kicker put his toe into the ball as the clock wound down to zero. The ball took off on a sinking line-drive which resembled a water-fowl with muscle spasms. As the ball wobbled toward the goal, it looked hopeless. But then, as if lifted by invisible hands, it barely cleared the uprights. Just then, the announcer declared, “In all my years as a sportscaster, I’ve never seen an uglier game-winning field goal!” After a brief pause, the other announcer said, “Yeah, but it’s what’s on the scoreboard that counts!” Such is the way with life. Life is often not a thing of beauty, and some of the time it doesn’t look much like we are going to make it at all. But the grace of God supports our floundering efforts. And long after imperfect efforts have been forgotten, the scoreboard will still be remembered as a thing of beauty.
