SING IT LIKE YOU KNOW HIM
The choir was singing Handel’s Messiah conducted by the great Reichel, and this was their last rehearsal. The soprano soloist came to the last refrain of “I know that my Redeemer liveth,” and her technique was perfect. She had flawless enunciation, precise note placement, faultless breath control. When she finished, Reichel stopped the orchestra. The choir expected his resounding praise of the soloist, for her work was mechanically perfect. But he did not. Instead he looked down at her and said soberly, “Oh, my daughter, do you know Him? Do you really know Him as your redeemer?” Shattered by the question, the soloist who was a devout Christian stammered, “Yes, yes, Mr. Reichel, I DO know Him. He IS my redeemer.” In almost a shout the great conductor cried, “Then sing it! Sing it so I will know!” He signaled the orchestra.
