The Bible does not say “God is Love” and leave it as an abstract principle floating above and beyond human time and place. The Bible says God loves Israel, God commissions Abraham, God chooses Mary, God speaks to Joseph, God loves Jesus. The Bible is not a series of “once upon a time in a far away land” fables. Rather the Bible stories are very particular: specific times, specific places, specific people. And the implication is clear: particular times and particular places and particular people living in those times and places matter to God.
It wasn’t that the “Word became flesh” once upon a time, somewhere out there. It was that a specific young woman named Mary from the City of Nazareth, had a Baby named Jesus in a town called Bethlehem.
It wasn’t that twelve men were called to be Apostles. It was that Jesus chose Peter and Andrew and James the son of Zebedee and John and Bartholomew and Matthew and…
