RENT A FRIEND
It is said that Rupert Brooke, the English poet, was about to depart Liverpool for New York when he noticed that the other passengers on the ship he was on had friends on the dock to bid them farewell. No one was there to wave good- bye to the poet, and he thus felt very lonely and desolate. Then in the distance, Mr. Brooke saw a little newspaper boy all by himself. He rushed off the ship and got hold of the boy. “What’s your name, son?” asked Mr. Brooke. “Bill.” “Bill, do you want to earn some money?” Like most boys, Bill jumped at the chance and nodded yes. “Then,” said the poet, “stand yonder on the dock and wave goodbye to me as the boat leaves.” Do we not need someone just as badly at times to wave to us? Someone to care? Someone to encourage us? Someone to notice we’re alive? Someone to be a friend?
