THE DOCTOR’S THUMB
Paul Brandt is a renowned British plastic surgeon, and also a deeply dedicated Christian. His book, In His Image, was written to demonstrate what the human body has to say about its Creator. In the book he remembered one of his medical school professors, whose name was Sir Lancelot Barrington-Ward. According to Dr. Brandt, Sir Lancelot would question each new class of medical students: “In the case of massive bleeding, what is your most useful instrument? At first the newcomers would propose exotic surgical tools, and the old teacher would frown and shake his head. There was only one acceptable answer, and Sir Lancelot would wait until some student came up with it: “Your thumb, sir.” Why? Because the thumb is readily available — every doctor has one — and it happens to offer a perfect blend of strong pressure and gentle compliancy. An ideal combination of strength and sensitivity.
