COMMUNICATION
Annie Dillard’s book reminded me of the old joke about the fellow who goes to the lumber yard and asks for some four-by-two’s. The clerk says, “You mean two-by-fours, don’t you?” He says, “Just a moment, I’ll check,” and he goes back to his car where his friends are sitting, they roll down the windows and he has a short conversation with them. After a minute he comes back and says, “Yes, I mean two-by-fours.” Then the merchant asks, “How long do you want them?” The fellow says, “Just a minute, I’ll check,” and he goes back to his friends in the car to confer once again. After chatting with them for a couple of minutes he comes back and answers the clerk, “A long time, we’re building a house.”
