CROSS-CULTURAL DEFINITION OF FAITH
Some of my fellow students, after living with inhabitants of Papua New Guinea for years, finally won their confidence. These missionary friends were hard put to find a Papuan equivalent for the word “faith.” Finally the missionaries showed them a chair which the Papuans marveled at for they had no chairs but sat on their haunches for hours at a time. So “faith” meant sitting on that sturdy thing the missionaries had brought with them, putting all their weight on it and trusting that it would hold them. From The Lutheran, 11-20-85, Martin J.
