These opening words in John’s Gospel remind us of a deep concern, expressed many times by the Old Testament Prophets. The people of Israel were involved in a tragedy, and it well may be our tragedy. From the very beginning, some of the people and their leaders had understood that God had called them to be a Chosen People, not as a privilege but as a responsibility. They understood that they were to be instruments and channels of God’s Grace in the world. When God chose Abraham as the Father of Israel He said, “Through you all the nations of the world will be blessed.” But Israel did not hear. Israel did not accept. Israel became self-centered. Israel rejoiced in what it meant to be a Chosen People as far as its own life was concerned.
