After graduating from medical school, Armand Hammer had six months available to him before his internship began. He decided to go to the Ural mountain area in Russia to see if he could be of help with his medical skills. There people were suffering from famine and disease. He soon discovered that they had many resources that they could trade for wheat, of which there was an abundance in America. He made arrangements to bring a million dollars worth of grain to the area. All through his trip he had been working on his Russian to be able to speak to the people. His plan to bring wheat to the starving people was met with great enthusiasm.
