SERVICE/ACTS OF MERCY
Dr. Kenneth E. Bailey has been a Presbyterian missionary and teacher in Beirut, Lebanon and in Jerusalem. One night, while living in Lebanon, he heard a bomb blast close by (an almost nightly occurrence). The next morning he checked and saw that the bomb had blasted a huge hole in the nearby Greek Church. The priest was in shock, and couldn’t leave his own home which had also been damaged in the blast, for fear of looting. Dr. Bailey knew that the church had to be boarded up by nightfall or it also would be looted. That afternoon Dr. Bailey cancelled his theology classes and brought his students to sweep up the church, bring the remaining benches downstairs for worship, lock up all the valuables, board the windows, and put a door back on the priest’s home.
