Once a boy was rowing an oldtimer across a wide river. The oldtimer picked a floating leaf from the water, studied it for a moment and then asked the boy if he knew anything about biology. “No, I don’t,” the boy replied. The oldtimer said, “Son, you have missed twenty-five percent of your life.” As they rowed on, the oldtimer took a rock from the bottom of the boat. He turned it in his hand, studying its coloration, and asked the boy, “Son, do you know anything about geology?” The boy sheepishly replied, “No, I don’t, sir.” The oldtimer said, “Son, you’ve missed fifty percent of your life.” Twilight was approaching and the oldtimer gazed raptly at the North Star that had begun to twinkle.
